Southern Water claims the Black Basta ransomware assault caused £4.5 million in expenditures.
Southern Water, a UK water company, reported a £4.5 million ($5.7 million) loss due to a cyberattack in February 2024. The Black Basta ransomware group claimed responsibility. The attack compromised some data but did not impact operations or customer systems. Southern Water hired cybersecurity experts and legal advisors, monitoring for potential data leaks. Financial reports revealed the company offered £750,000 ($950k) to the hackers, though they initially demanded $3.5 million. By late February, Southern Water’s listing was removed from Black Basta’s extortion site, suggesting a settlement. The company has not confirmed whether a ransom was paid.
